Generally speaking, German Nutcrackers depict a certain frighfulness in their faces to scare away evil spirits, so the story goes, giving young children protection from harm while their parents were away from home.

Russian Nutcrackers, however, are more symbolic of Russian Soldiers and Csars and have a certain whimsical character to themselves. The hand-carved details of the Russian soldiers are incredible.
