Denise Mazal Resnerova was born in Prague, in the Czech Republic. After defecting to Paris, where she was refused political asylum, she was invited to the U.S. to work for the Belgian Ambassador in Aspen, Colorado. Her friends in France were very surprised that she would leave Europe. They had several misconceptions about the U.S.A. To them, Chicago was still in the gangster 1930's! Californians all wore flowers on their heads, and New York was the Statue of Liberty with strong, powerful Presidents.

Imagine her surprise on arriving at JFK airport in New York at being greeted by a young lady wearing oversize glasses with large springs connected to hanging eyeballs! She welcomed Denise to this country with eyeballs bouncing, and Denise was speechless. Her next sight was of a pale-faced man with blood dripping from his mouth! She remembers others at the terminal who looked just as weird, and she just wanted to get out of there as fast as she could!

It only took Denise about six years to figure this out, when her daughter Veronica went "trick or treating" in the neighborhood. Denise turned to her husband and said, "I can't believe it! I came to the U.S. on Halloween!" We are so lucky that this plucky young woman overlooked these odd beginnings and stayed in this country to become the proprietor of the best shop in Boerne, Texas: Ewe & Eye!
